Vifas 120 (Fexofenadine) is an antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical in the body that causes allergy symptoms.

Side Effects of Vifas 120mg Tablet

• Common: Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea.
• Others: Vomiting, cough, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), back pain, fever, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), stomach discomfort, somnolence (sleepiness), rhinorrhea (runny nose).

Indication of Vifas 120mg Tablet

• Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis:
  • Alleviates symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children.
• Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria:
  • Treats uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Pharmacology

• Mechanism of Action:
  • Fexofenadine Hydrochloride is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist.
  • It blocks histamine action, which helps alleviate allergy symptoms.
• Absorption:
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration.
  • Peak plasma concentration reached in 2-3 hours.
  • Does not appear to cross the blood-brain barrier, minimizing central nervous system side effects.

Dosage & Administration of Vifas 120mg Tablet

• Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria:
  • Adults and children 12 years and older:
    • 60 mg twice daily 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily.
    • Renal impairment: 60 mg once daily.
  • Children 6 to 11 years:
    • 30 mg twice daily or 60 mg once daily.
    • Renal impairment: 30 mg once daily.
  • Children 2 to 11 years (Suspension):
    • 30 mg (5 ml) twice daily.
    • Renal impairment: 30 mg (5 ml) once daily.
  • Children 6 months to less than 2 years (Suspension):
    • 15 mg (2.5 ml) twice daily.
    • Renal impairment: 15 mg (2.5 ml) once daily.

Interaction

• Alcohol: This may cause excessive drowsiness.
• Avoid fruit juices (apple, orange, grapefruit) as they can reduce effectiveness.
• Antacids: Avoid taking 30 minutes before or after as they can hinder absorption.
• Other medications:
  • Ketoconazole or erythromycin can increase fexofenadine levels.
  • Antipsychotics (phenothiazines) can increase the risk of arrhythmias.
  • Rifampin may reduce efficacy.
  • Verapamil may increase bioavailability.
  • Pramlintide may increase anticholinergic effects.

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Category C (Risk cannot be ruled out. Animal studies have shown adverse effects, but there are no adequate studies in humans. Should be used only if clearly needed and the benefits outweigh the risks.)
• Lactation: Safe if prescribed. Human studies suggest the drug does not significantly pass into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Use caution in elderly patients and those with reduced renal function.
